This is an assignment I completed for my Communications Technology in Education class in Fall 2013. I was required to complete an effective Internet search to find learning resources in one or more K-6 curricular topics. Then, I had to select a few of the best resources and create one learning activity that would integrates these online resources.
Connecting with the alphabet in kindergarten
Title of Activity: Practicing Alphabetical Order
Reference Section:
ABCya.com, L.L.C. (2012). Connect the Dots ABC Order. Retrieved Oct. 8, 2013, from http://www.abcya.com/
Grade Level: K
Subject: English Language Arts
Brief Description of Activity:
Students will visit the website http://www.abcya.com/connect_the_dots_abc_order.htm where they will practice alphabetical order while connecting the dots to reveal a picture of the alphabet.
General Learner Outcome:
Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts. (2)
Specific Learner Outcomes:
Use Strategies and Cues (2.1)
Students will recite the letters of the alphabet in order.
ICT Outcomes:
F.1.1.2 apply terminology appropriate to the technologies being used at this division level
F.1.1.3 demonstrate an understanding that the user manages and controls the outcomes of technology.
F.2.1.1 identify technologies used in everyday life
F.2.1.2 describe particular technologies being used for specific purposes.
F.3.1.1 demonstrate courtesy and follow classroom procedures when making appropriate use of computer technologies
F.3.1.2 work collaboratively to share limited resources
F.5.1.1 demonstrate proper posture when using a computer
F.6.1.1 perform basic computer operations, which may vary by environment, including powering up ... clicking on an icon, … executing programs ... and powering down.
P5.1.1 navigate within a document, compact disc or other software program that contains links
P5.1.2 access hyperlinked sites on an intranet or the Internet
Rationale for Computer Integration:
Computers have been integrated into this assignment to allow students to work individually at their own pace and to be able to see their mistakes as soon as they happen (when the alphabet is out of order), so that they can correct them. This should accommodate a classroom of individual learners with varying needs more readily.
Description of Search Strategies:
I conducted an Internet searching using the search engine Google. I did two advanced searches to find pages with these exact phrases:
• Connect sounds with letters online activity for Kindergarten
• Phonics games for Kindergarten (This one was the most successful)
Both times, I requested the search find pages with none of these words:
• Subscription, paid, trial, membership, username, and password
